Counselors

Rich Painter, M.S., LMFT is the director of Sky Counseling Center. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #114765 by the state of California and #3281 by the state of Florida. He draws on the insights of psychological theory as well as spiritual resources for healing. He believes that by exploring unmet needs from the past, people can develop healthier relationships today. By working through painful losses and wounds, people can release unhelpful beliefs about themselves and others in order to live more fully in the present and with hope for the future. We are hurt in relationships; we are also healed in relationship, and the therapeutic relationship can be a useful resource. Areas of focus include couple, marital, and singlehood issues, family/parenting dynamics and attachment, anxiety, depression, adolescents and young adults, career coaching, abuse and trauma, spiritual growth and struggles, gender and sexuality issues, loss and grief, and pornography/addictions. He is a certified Prepare-Enrich Counselor and offers pre-engagement, premarital and marital couples counseling, and he is also a certified Family Wellness Instructor. He is a professional member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy as well as the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. He also provides online counselinglife coaching and relationship coaching. Sky Counseling Center also offers spiritual direction.

Rich holds a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary and brings an extensive history of experience in spiritually based healing ministry. With over twenty years of church ministry experience, he has a unique understanding of the needs of families. He also has experience as a youth pastor and teacher and enjoys working with adolescents and young adults in issues relating to identity and spiritual development. He has been married to his wife for over twenty years and enjoys being a father. Together with his wife, he has led numerous small groups and served on prayer ministry and leadership discernment teams for a number of churches and Christian organizations. This background has given him additional sensitivity to the stresses and demands on those who serve in ministry as well as an ability to work with people who have suffered from spiritual abuse and negative church experiences. Rich’s desire is to partner with Jesus as He binds up the broken-hearted and sets the captives free to love (Luke 4:18). He is grateful for God’s passionate pursuit in his life, and he loves to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space for people to develop a sense of connectedness and discover greater fulfillment in their relationships.

Jamee Hawthorne, M.S., AMFT #138208. Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. Employed and Supervised by Rich Painter, M.S., LMFT#114765.

Welcome and congratulations on taking the first step towards your healing journey! I am a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (#138208), currently offering psychotherapy virtually in California. I work with individuals from all walks of life and specialize working with the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) community. I work with teens and adults who may be seeking therapy to process childhood trauma, generational trauma, improve and implement healthy boundaries, and/or strengthen relationships with themselves and/or others. I work with couples and families through an attachment/relational lens to help you identify and step out of the negative cycles so that you may find your way to secure emotional connections which foster safe, stable, and more satisfying close relationships.

I graduated with my Master of Science in Counseling Psychology at California State University, Long Beach and completed my practicum at Long Beach Trauma Recovery Center, where I received training to provide evidence-based therapies to diverse survivors of trauma, violence, and crime. My training includes Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET). My therapeutic approach is culturally centered and integrates attachment theory, narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed therapy, and mindfulness, which can be tailored to what resonates with you and helps you move closer to your goals.

I offer a holistic approach which includes wellness of the mind, body, and soul and offer faith-based therapy to those who would like to include their faith/spirituality. What exactly this looks like is up to you! No matter where you are on your faith journey this is a safe space to explore, ask questions, process mixed emotions that may arise from church hurt and/or purity culture. In this space you do not have to choose between therapy and theology, instead we combine strengths from both to help you thrive through life’s stressors.

I hold a compassionate, non-judgmental, down-to-earth, and reflective space where you can come as you are and be gently challenged for growth. I welcome those who are new to therapy or have been here before. Healing is not always a linear process and no matter what your process may look like, I would be honored to be a part of your journey.

Randolph Farase, M.A., AMFT #143296. Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. Employed and Supervised by Rich Painter, M.S., LMFT#114765.

For those who have trouble socializing or maintaining relationships. If you experience stage fright before a competition or performance. Feeling pressure or mundaneness of the daily grind from work, school, or relationships.

I specialize in working with people who are experiencing social and performance anxiety, stress from work or school, relationship problems, or having difficulty finding happiness or motivation.

I know it may be difficult to reach out to someone you can trust to keep things confidential and will not judge you for the things you say. During our meetings, I can provide a nonjudgmental space, where you have the ability to control the direction and pace of your healing and growth. We can reflect on past and present experiences and explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. And we may also set small goals to help you get started in a positive direction to get to where you want to be.

I host meetings online, and am available to schedule appointments Monday through Saturday including evenings and nights. I look forward to working together with you. Please let me know if you have any questions or want to know more about scheduling an appointment.

Suzanna Chan, M.A., AMFT #131338. Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. Employed and Supervised by Rich Painter, M.S., LMFT#114765.

I warmly welcome you as you embark on your journey of exploration and discovery along this bright new path. Wherever you may find yourself on your life's journey, know that you're not alone. Addressing issues like anger, anxiety, depression, trauma, bullying, grief and loss, relationship struggles, among other emotional wounds can be tough. Despite this, I offer supportive empathy, fostering your comfort in facing these challenges.

In my work with children and teens, I have used various therapeutic techniques to facilitate healing and I emphasize Psycho-Education, emotional regulation activities, and Strength-based approaches. In Family Therapy, my aim is to foster harmony, improve communication, and resolve conflicts among family members using various Family Therapy constructs and strategies.

In individual sessions, I have applied concepts from Narrative Therapy in my work with others to help externalize themselves from the problem, reshape their narrative, and highlight strengths. At times I may eclectically integrate various modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to restructure negative thoughts and behavior patterns, Motivational Interviewing as a catalyst to spur change, along with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to regulate emotions and promote mindfulness.

I create personalized treatment plans tailored to your needs to help you reach your goals. There is no one-size-fits all treatment option, and as such I tend to tailor fit my treatment plans for each specific client’s needs and level of understanding to ensure the client can meet their goals.

In my passion for enhancing communication and relationships within families, I have received additional and extensive training working with children and adolescents. Parents often find that I am well-suited and a great fit to help their kids navigate through emotionally challenging periods of their lives.

I would also welcome your request to incorporate your faith in your journey. I believe integrating spirituality and faith in therapy can provide greater healing and help find purpose in the chaos of life. Whatever our beliefs or values are, I believe that it can impact our experiences.

I faithfully enjoy my role as a therapist and am dedicated to bringing genuine healing to everyone who seeks therapeutic support from me, and I love to bring knowledge and humor together for a very supportive growth environment.

Though confronting our pain and undergoing healing may be tough at times, I'll be here to offer you support and encouragement. Let's embark on a journey together to help you thrive, and to truly live out your best life.
